Signs that this match would be close came right way when ICC's team of Dellehunt, Gilly, Freeman, and Sericola won the 4 x 800 relay. Chatham was confident this event was theirs to win with their team of Wenk, Avens, Behn, and Madsen, but inspired running by the ICC team, especially eight-grader Mikela Freeman, who was a surprise to the Chatham team, created an early lead for the Riders. Hayley Madsen tried to rein in ICC on the last leg of the relay, but the Riders held on and captured the first points of the match.
ICC's Lisa Bodratti and Jen Receveur are two of the top hurdlers in the Patroon Conference, and they proved it . The pair took first and second in the 100-meter hurdles respectively. Lanphear for Chatham took third. In the 400-meter hurdles, Leah Wightman out ran Bodratti to give the Panthers the first place finish.
In 100-meter Chatham's Caily Nieto ran a terrific race besting her personal fastest by .3 second. Her 12.7 time was good enough for first and allowed Chatham pick up some unexpected points. ICC's Kameron Samuelson and Rachel Visconti took second and third.
Next up was the 1500-meter race where Chatham claimed first and second place as Madsen completed at 5:38.3 and Clark finished about six seconds behind that.
Chatham was able to pick up important points on an event that could have gone either way when they took the 4 x 100 relay. Caley Van Brunt built the panthers an early lead in her lead-off leg of the event. Clean handoffs made the difference through the rest of the race.
Chatham ran Haley Madsen in the 400-meter race, and it paid off since she took first, holding off ICC's Samuelson and Dellehunt. However, the victory was short-lived because Madsen seemed to be running out of gas in the 800-meter. ICC's Freeman ran a great race and just held off Madsen, winning the event by just .2 of a second. Wightman ran a fairly quick 200 meters to win over Samuelson by one second. Finishing off the solo running events, Chatham captured the 3000 meter with seven-grader Avens and senior Wenk taking first and second.
In an exciting final relay race, ICC placed their best runners—Freeman, Dellehunt, Nicholson, and Samuelson—in the 4 x 400. With solid performances all around, ICC built a lead that Chatham's Wightman could not make up despite running a sub 58 split.
Chatham's Van Brunt threw a personal best record to take the shot put event. ICC senior Kate Parsons took the discus with a 28' 10.5" throw. Wightman won her third event as she placed first in the pole vault with a height of 9' 6".
In the jumping events, a top score of 4' 8" gave Dellehunt and ICC the high jump. Nieto picked up two wins for Chatham by taking first in the long jump. She followed that by a first in the triple jump, an event she was completing in for the first time.
When all was totaled up, just three points separated the teams, with Chatham winning 72-69. Despite the on-and-off rain, the event was exciting from start to finish and left both teams and their fans looking forward to the Patroon Championships when the teams will meet up again. |
