WEEK IN REVIEW: BOYS' BASKETBALL

Greg Dedrick

01-04-10 - There were a number of matchups, including some league play, in the days between Christmas and New Years on the boys’ side. After New Years, teams went back on break until next week when school and a full slate of games resume. Here is a look at what the local squads did in this past week.

MONDAY

New Lebanon at Argyle

The Tigers competed in one of two CHVL vs. Adirondak League games they’d play in two consecutive days. Taking on a very strong Class D Argyle squad, the Tigers battled back from a 7-point halftime deficit to take the lead before Argyle tied the game at the free-throw line in the waning seconds and brought home the 82-76 victory in overtime.

Bryan Potter led the Tigers in the defeat with 23 points, including two three-pointers. Mike Gavrity hit from downtown three times on his way to 20 points, while Todd Ferguson nailed four triples en route to 17 points.

TUESDAY

Fort Ann at New Lebanon

The Tigers evened their out-of-conference record for the week at 1-1 after a 53-38 win over Fort Ann. New Lebanon took a 9-point lead after a quarter, before Fort Ann made the game close. The Tigers finished on a 17-4 run to close out the victory.

Mike Gavrity continued his hot shooting, knocking down 4 three-pointers and leading the team with 20 points. Bryan Potter and Todd Ferguson each chipped in with 12 in the win.

Cairo-Durham at Chatham

Both these teams came into the season with expectations of being in the upper half of the league, but heading into Tuesday, each had just one win in league play. After falling behind by 6 points early, the Panthers used strong play in the second and third quarters to send the game into the final stanza tied. In the final quarter, the Mustangs outscored Chatham 21-15 to secure a 62-56 win.

The Mustangs knocked down six shots from beyond the arch compared to just two by the Panthers, while Cairo also got to the free-throw line for 25 shots compared to Chatham’s 15.

Will Gauthier led Chatham with 21, while Mike Flemming had 12 and Brandon Johnson added 10.

Greenville at Taconic Hills

Two winless teams met up on Tuesday, and the Titans came away with their first win. The two teams scored 14 points a piece in all four quarters to send the game into overtime, where the Titans outscored Greenville 7-4 to pick up a 63-60 win.

Six different players scored for Taconic Hills, with Dylan Dotterer leading the way with 20 points. Clarence Scott chipped in with a season-high 18, while Kyle Preusser added in 10.

Catskill at Hudson

The Bluehawks came into their game on Tuesday having won four in a row, while the visiting Cats had dropped two in a row. Using an aggressive man-to-man defense that created turnovers and allowed them to get out on the break, Catskill blew out Hudson 65-44.

Despite surrendering just one made three-pointer and only four free throws, Hudson could not slow down the fast-breaking Catskill squad, which put seven players into the scoring column and four players into double digits.

Jeff Crank nailed Hudson’s only two three’s while leading the team with 17 points mostly off midrange jumpers. Nevin Sheldon was hampered by fouls and injuries early in the contest but added in 11 in the loss. Larell Roberts was held to a season-low 7 points.

WEDNESDAY

Hawthorne Valley at Heatly

The Wildcats fought tooth and nail against league-unbeaten Heatly but came up just short falling 49-45.  Hawthorne Valley kept the game close throughout but struggled to find points till the final quarter.

Christian Peterson led Hawthorne Valley with 17 points, while Sjaak Smeele chipped in with 15. Three other players also got in on the scoring for the Wildcats, but it was not enough to close the gap.

THURSDAY

ICC at KSA Holiday Tournament

With a new Section II rule in effect this year which allows only 18 regular season games, all Patroon Conference teams are left out in the cold as far as non-league games go as they play an 18-game league schedule.

The Riders found a way to stay sharp over the holiday break by heading down to Orlando, Florida, where they competed in three scrimmages against teams from around the country.

ICC was able to pull off an impressive 2-1 record in those three scrimmages and will return home confident in their continued quest for a league title.

POWER RANKINGS

Ichabod Crane:  Blowing away league mates but have yet to face other top teams.

New Lebanon: Easy early slate has left them undefeated in the league.

Germantown:  Clipps playing well and eyeing showdown with Heatly this week.

Hudson:  Were hot but a blowout loss to Catskill hurts.

Chatham:  Have talent but continue to struggle in the early goings.

Taconic Hills:  Notched their first win of the year last week.

Hawthorne Valley:  Just one win in a competitive CHVL.
