COUNTY RESIDENTS TO RECEIVE PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNTS

09-23-09 – 2:45 p.m. - Columbia County residents can take advantage of discounts on prescription drugs as a result of a new program the county started this year.

Cards were sent to 30,000 homes across the county in the last week through a partnership with insurance provider ProAct.

James Rutkey, the county's Human Resources administrator, said the prescription cards need only to be presented at a participating pharmacy and will result in an average discount 10 to 20 percent on brand name prescription drugs and as much as a 70 percent discount on generic drugs. Rutkey said the card is accepted at most pharmacies in the county. According to ProAct, participating pharmacies in the area include CVS, Walgreen, Price Chopper, Hannaford, Target, and many others. For more information, ProAct can be reached at (877) 776-2285.

Rutkey said the card will be most beneficial to residents with little or no insurance coverage for prescription drugs. For those with coverage, the prescription card will provide a discount on drugs not covered by their plans. Every member of a household, even a student away at college, is eligible for discounts with the card.

Rutkey said the county is offering the prescription because it made sense.

"We started work ProAct at the beginning of the year when they were brought on to provide the insurance to our county employees," he said. "It was through that partnership that we learned they have this program that provides discounts for residents. It just made sense . . . especially in these times."

There is no cost to the county to administer the program; ProAct provides all of the information and support. At the same time, Rutkey said, there is no cost to card holders.

Endorsed by the New York State Association of Counties, the program was approved by the Board of Supervisors earlier this year. Columbia County joins two dozen other counties already participating in the program in New York
