THE RACE FOR
CLAVERACK TOWN SUPERVISOR
The Town of Claverack has been the focus of some controversial plans proposed by county government in the last year or so: the purchase of the former Ockawamick School in Claverack for the purpose of creating a "county campus" in the geographic center of the county and relocating the Department of Social Services to the site; and the proposal to merge Pine Haven, the county-run nursing home and rehabilitation facility, with a for-profit "aging in place" campus being advanced for Niverville, in the Town of Kinderhook, by Long Island developer Ronald J. DeVito.
Although the county is now investigating alternative ways to use Ockawamick, which it purchased for $1.5 million, is pursuing a plan to keep DSS in Hudson, and has announced its intention to renovate and expand Pine Haven at its current location in the Village of Philmont, the proposals remain issues in the campaign.
In the race for Claverack Town Supervisor, incumbent Jim Keegan, is being challenged by Robin Andrews, a former Village Trustee in Philmont. Keegan, a Republican, has also been endorsed by the Conservative and the Independence parties. Andrews is a Democrat. As in the race for Common Council President in Hudson, there is some element of old versus new in this race: Keegan, who is 72, has lived here for thirty-six years and has been the Claverack Town Supervisor for the past twelve years; Andrews, who is 47, has been here for ten years.
