COLUMBIA COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OPENS "RESTORE"

PRESS RELEASE

The Columbia County affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization dedicated to assuring that families can buy safe, affordable housing, opened a Habitat ReStore on Saturday, November 14, to offer donated and surplus building materials and merchandise at significant discounts.

The new retail materials supply store, at 829 Route 66 at the intersection of Routes 66 and Route 9H, has been in planning and development for several months, and will be open on Fridays and Saturdays to the general public, and Monday through Saturday for individuals, stores, and contractors to donate their materials.

More than 600 Habitat ReStores are open across the country and have proven to be successful at raising funds for Habitat building projects, while supplying communities with needed building materials and merchandise that otherwise might end up in landfills, at a deep discount.

“ReStores find willing buyers for donated and surplus materials, while keeping stuff out of landfills. This is excellent for recycling,” said Pat Baer, a member of Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Directors. “It’s good for the community, because we will be selling the merchandise at drastic discounts, generally half or less than half what the merchandise would sell for at a normal retail outlet.” Building materials of every genre will be available, including siding, old kitchen cabinets, and even appliances.

“We’re going to re-side our house with material purchased at the ReStore,” said Melissa Sarris of Chatham. “This is a great bargain for us, and it’s great for the environment, and helps Habitat keep on building.”

Currently completing its tenth house for a partner family with the help of volunteer builders and organizers, Columbia County Habitat for Humanity aims to generate additional revenue to allow Habitat to build
more homes for Columbia County residents.

For more information, or to discuss donating surplus building, renovating or home furnishing materials, call Brenda Adams, Executive Director, Columbia County Habitat for Humanity at (518) 392-9286.
